"Still the one who best understands the significance of light is not the electrician, not the painter,
not the photographer, but the man who lost his sight in adulthood.  There must be the wisdom of deficiency
in deficiency, just as there is the wisdom of plenty in plenty."
Kobo Abe (1924-1993), cited from his novel The Face of Another (1964)

About

Please join us for an artist talk by Theresa DeSalvio. She will share insights into her practice as a whole, as well as details about the motivations behind the series, The Life and Times of the Blue Fairy. Following the artist talk at Express Newark, guests will walk to CJ Gallery, located in the Center for Law & Justice, Rutgers University – Newark, where DeSalvio will lead them through her exhibition.

The Life and Times of the Blue Fairy is a narrative body of paintings that use as its central character the Blue Fairy, the magical being who transforms Pinocchio into a real boy. In these paintings, Theresa DeSalvio explores the thoughts and actions of the Blue Fairy in her daily life, her childhood memories and travel. The artist uses simplified space and bold color to highlight the emotionally charged narrative of the paintings.

Theresa DeSalvio is a painter, author and filmmaker. Her paintings encompass imagery based on childhood memories, everyday life and travel. DeSalvio has explored psychological and social issues in her work that have included addiction (heroin), survival (cancer) and social interactions. In addition to making paintings, DeSalvio has been making videos that extend the narrative of her work. DeSalvio holds a Master of Fine Arts from Hunter College, City University of New York and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts, New York.

The National Academy of Medicine (NAM), a non-profit research organization in Washington, DC, called on artists to express what clinician burnout and clinician resilience/well-being looks, sounds, and feels like to them. The purpose of Expressions of Clinician Well-Being is to promote greater awareness and understanding of barriers to clinician well-being—and solutions that promise a brighter future.
